Celery – Herb Garden Care Guide

Updated: Oct 18, 2020

Celery is one of the traditional Mediterranean herbs recognized for its strong aromatic flavour, which it imparts to a variety of cuisines. It is a small biennial herbaceous plant that can be grown quickly as a potherb in the home gardens for its flavourful leaves.

Uses: Celery is widely used in Caribbean cuisine, garnishing rice dishes, pasta dishes, noodles and potato salad. Celery is also added to the seasoning of baked, fried or roasted fish, meats, stew and soups. Celery is also popularly used in juices, cocktails and detox drinks.

Sunlight: Celery does well in both full and partial sunlight. Indoors, place near a sunny window or sunny patio.

Humidity: Ensure proper air circulation is provided.

Soil: Our herb garden contains well drain soil which is ideal for growth. Once per week lightly till the soil around the plant. This achieves aeration which allows air, water and nutrients to penetrate the roots. This helps the roots grow deeply and produce a stronger, more vigorous herb garden.

Water: Celery grow best is moist soil, water your celery regularly, do not allow to dry out.

Nutrients: Our Herb Garden doesn’t require immediate plant food, as our potting soil already contains a slow-release plant food that can last up to 6 months. If plant food is needed or your herb plant shows signs of stress like yellowing foliage, you can add your favourite compost, or use an organic liquid plant food or a weak solution of an all-purpose water-soluble fertilizer.

Harvest: Harvest the outer leaves together with stems, cut 1 to 2 inches above soil, making sure not to cut off all the plant at once. Continuous harvest will encourage future growth.
