Updated: Oct 17, 2020

Sage is viewed as a powerful herb for driving away negative energy, thoughts, and worries. Sage burning, or smudging, is a sacred practice that can be traced back through many cultures, over thousands of years. The idea is that, sage smoke clears negative energy, thoughts, emotions, and heals the mind and body. The scent of sage and sage smoke is a wonderful cleanser for the air around you, eliminating lingering odors like those you’d find in your kitchen or musty basement. Making sage bundles is simple, just follow step 1 to 7 for your DIY sage bundle.

MATERIALS:

  • Fresh clean sage

  • Other herbs (lavender and rosemary are all great additions)

  • Cotton twine

  • Scissors

STEPS:

  1. Your first step is to arrange your materials on your work surface.

  2. Ensure your sage bundles are about 5-inches long. Use scissors to trim sage pieces to this length, bunching the pieces together with other herbs if you like and layering the trimmed pieces on top each other.

  3. When your bundle is nice and thick, using your cotton twine, tie a long length to the bottom of the bundle.

  4. Start wrapping the bundle upwards, tucking leaves in as you go.

  5. When you reach the top of the bundle, switch direction and wrap back downward.

  6. At the original knot tie off the string and trim any remaining string ends. Repeat to make as many bundles as you want!

  7. Set your bundles aside in a cool dry place out of direct sunlight and allow at least three weeks drying.
