Gardening Safety Guide

Gardening is a wonderful outdoor activity with great benefits like physical exercise, stress relief, beautifying your home and growing your own herbs, fruits and vegetables. When in the garden your health and safety should always be a priority. Below are some tips to help keep you safe and healthy in the garden.

Protect Your Skin

When gardening it is important to wear proper protective gears. We recommend that you wear long pants, a long-sleeve shirt, sturdy shoes and gloves to protect your skin from irritation, cuts, and insect bites. When using equipment such as weed whackers or lawn mowers, wear eye-wear that will protect you from any ricocheting debris. We would recommend working in your garden before the sun rises or after the sun sets, however if you are working in the direct sunlight use a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 to avoid sun damage and sunburn.

Warm-up

Gardening is a physical activity and it is important to make sure that your body is ready to undergo physical exercise. Do some stretching and warming up by walking around the garden. This will help to reduce your risk of injury and fatigue while gardening. Make sure to focus on lower back, leg, and arm stretches to loosen the muscles that are utilized most while gardening.

Avoid Repetitive Motions

Prolonged and repetitive motions, such as digging, raking, trimming, pruning and planting, might irritate your skin, tendons or nerves. To avoid this, switch up your tasks every 15 minutes and take breaks between task.

Avoid Bending

Bending will put strain on your back. To avoid bending use a chair while in the garden or kneel wearing knee-pads.

Check Your Lifting

When lifting objects, especially heavy ones, engage your legs and not your back. When you’re carrying heavy objects, hold them close to your body to reduce strain.

Know Your Limits

It is also important to know your body’s limits and take frequent breaks to avoid overexertion. During these breaks, make sure to drink water to stay well hydrated. After your breaks, switch tasks for a while to avoid overworking one area of your body.
