Gardening is educational and helps children develop valuable skills. These skills include, responsibility from caring for plants, understanding as children learn how systems in gardening works, this also helps build self-confidence in children as they achieve their goals, and developing the skill of cooperation where teamwork is present.
This also gives children a passion for creativity and innovation in finding different ways for gardening with a love for nature and an understanding of nutrition and leading a healthy lifestyle.
HOW TO GET CHILDREN INVOLVE IN GARDENING:
Make it fun
Give children their own gardening space where limited start with garden pots or planters.
Give them their own tools, ensure tools are lightweight, easy to handle and correct sized for children.
Involve children in the planning and design of the garden.
Let them decide what they want to plant.
Give them jobs like watering and weeding.
Always make it a team effort.
ALWAYS PRACTICE SAFETY!
To make the garden safe for children:
Select the correct-sized tool.
Keep gardening sprays and fertilizers out of reach.
Do not use chemicals. Garden organically whenever possible.
Provide safe storage for equipment and tools.
Secure fences and gates.
Provide shade in with umbrellas or shade cloth.
In Trinidad’s hot weather ensure children wear a hat, sunscreen, suitable clothing and boots.
Do not leave buckets of water unattended around very young children and toddlers.
